FX Dub style Tape delay

Post by blacbeard »

Hello Everyone,

I felt like sharing another creation of mine. An atmospheric filtered delay line to emulate a tape delay. It has a really spacey echo sound that is perfect for dub delays and anything requiring ambience.

It is a chain of echo, distortion, vibrato and filter modules. There are three lots groups all chained in serial. There is a feed from the end of each block to a reverb for extra echo chamber dubness.

Hope you enjoy.

A useful feature of the delay is that you can alter the delay time of all the taps together by adjusting the Metamodule tempo. This keeps everything in sync which is excellent for automations.

@ blacbeard, your tape delay metamodule sounds awesome!

Is there any chance of uploading it as it was before it was saved as a metamodule?
It would be cool to get a closer, more detailed look at how you created it, step by step.

Tape delay probably isn't the best term to describe the delay. Probably bucket brigade would be the more accurate description. Regardless, here is the song file as requested. Simple isn't it. Essentially a dry signal is fed out via the reverb. The delay signal goes along a chain of wet only delays. There are 3 taps. Each tap has some additional processing, most notable is the HP filtering with each subsequent filter cutoff set a bit higher than the last.

There is not much to it and I'm sure that it can be improved upon with a bit more tweaking. There is some phasing as a result of the delay lines cancelling each other out. It adds a bit more spacey flavour to the effect but to eliminate this, you should reduce the feed back down to a single echo on each Echo module. This would then require more echos to be added to the chain for a longer delay line, probably Amplifiers as well to boost the signals too. This would result in a more CPU intensive effect with a less phasey sound.

Unfortunately the first link is not active anymore.
Please zip your metamodule and attach it to the post. Max file size is 64kb, but it is more than enough for pure generators and effects :)
