loud isn't just to compete, it's also just how i like it :) if it's too loud, turn it down

i level everything more recent to -14 dB lufs, which is the recommended standard for music ( by ieee i think).

if you leave less headroom, and we level both tracks to the same lu or rms, your track might not appear louder but significantly less loud then the other. this just in case this isnt obvious.

still i get some tracks that appear louder or more quiet than some of my others depending on the overall mix, though, but i try to avoid that. yt btw levels the same afaik.

i am aware of the -14 standard, but the problem is that not all platforms strictly adhere to it. obviously playing the audio files locally doesn't have normalization, and streaming wise soundcloud and bandcamp don't, and even spotify and youtube can have their normalization bypassed or turned off (in some cases). when that's the case mixes that are below the genre standard loudness will stand out like a sore thumb. ymmv, but the genres i work in a lot - heavy bass music/dnb - have absurdly loud mixes anyway. if a dj plays your -14 lufs track next to ones at -3 or -2, it just won't cut it. and no, their faders are already at the max so they can't just turn it up

but it's not just competition - moderately squashed masters have a distinct sound that i like and think is appropriate for my style. when done correctly (which i'm admittedly still working out) clipped mixes have a powerful sound that in some cases can sound close to their dynamic counterparts. that and the "soundgoodizer mixing" style is part of my personal aesthetic anyway

btw some of my arguments here are sourced from Baphometrix's CTZ doc - some sections of it go into this topic. also she addresses some of those arguments in this video. i'm not a dj but she is.

either way, at the end of the day it's all subjective taste anyway, like everything in music, and we can agree to disagree

"faders are already at the max so they can't just turn it up"

dumb.

if you play music that loud everyone just runs out of the room.

you guys don't play live i can tell. always leave headroom in your trax that is the lesson of the -14 LUFS max for youtube. just use that standard, if you dont your music will be too loud. ear fatigue works on the audience as well. dont be that guy... if your music is hardcore it will still come across as that, when i listen to your trax there are no dynamics, and as much effort as you put into them, there should be compared to labels like warp, schematic and acid waxa. you should compare your masters to them.

they're a bit shorter compared to my other releases, i didn't really have much time to work on these and they ended up only being half their intended length. but nonetheless i hope they're enjoyable <3
