Fractal Bits (drum synth)

Post by NightRadio »

Fractal Bits is a drum synth with over four billion unique sounds created by fractal algorithms. Each set of 12 drums corresponds to a code of 8 characters (you can save/copy/paste it as plain text).

Features:
  • search for new sounds with three buttons: next random set (>>>), edit code, previous set (<<<);
  • three types of keyboards for live drumming: on-screen buttons, PC keyboard, MIDI input;
  • six additional processing parameters + control of all parameters via MIDI;
  • real-time audio recording to WAV (32-bit);
  • export to: WAV (one file or a set), SunVox (samples + effects in one file), text clipboard;
  • the LCK button freezes individual drums - they will not change during the search for new sets;
  • iOS: Audio Unit Extension (AUv3), Audiobus, Wi-Fi export/import.

This is huge! My instant favourite drum synt/set generator for SunVox. The ability to tweak it later in SunVox is great! Thanks for such tool!

One quick feature idea is to add 'pad re-arrange' mode. Similar to lock mode but re-arranging pads/sounds by drag'n'drop swap or shift. So the drum sets can be arranged to more standard kit layouts (i.e. kicks on note C etc.).

Yet another one small usability idea. Could we see a tiny/half transparent lock icon (or pad sound code?) in the corner of locked pads in non-locked/play mode? Then it will be directly visible which pads are not replaced when assembling new kits with random generator - no need to switch back and forth to lock mode to check this.

Thanks again! Love the glitchy sounds one can get from FB!

Is it/will it be possible to edit the code for single pads as it is possible for whole kit?

I know ... too many questions but FB is so inspiring :)

Great app! 8)

What are the MIDI mappings for the individual pads? I’m trying to set it up with StepPolyArp Unit in sequencer mode, and it’s tough to tell what note goes to what pad.

EDIT: Figured it out using a keyboard (StepPolyArp Unit wasn’t lighting the pads), starts with C in the lower left, then goes up the octave.

This app is so good. :Yahoo!:

A few ideas for your consideration:

1. Fine tuning! Transpose is nice, fine tuning would be great to have. EDIT: Fine tune is already in, by double tapping slider and entering value

2. Control over individual pads. Not sure if that would be easy to implement considering the way the app is set up, but it could include things like:

-transpose individual pad, maybe by tapping transpose button on the right to bring up sliders on individual pads
-effects sliders for each pad

Just some immediate thoughts I had. :D

Thanks! :) I will try to take into account all the wishes!

1) App menu -> Import/Export -> Export to SunVox -> save SunVox file
2) Open the Files app (on iOS) -> Fractal Bits -> copy sunvox-file or just open it :)

You could almost just leave it as is. Such a good app.

Individual pad parameters might be good, but there’s already so much variety as is that it’s not really needed.

I found the way to fine tune by the way (double tap slider).

Good stuff! :beer:

This is such a good app! I really like the visual display of the pads too, it doesn't take that long to start recognizing patterns too so that helps. I would like to see what you could do making a similar synth where there are functions that people could use to make sounds procedurally, the visuals remind me of making procedural textures for graphics. Ive actually been thinking of this since you made pixi visor but now this reminded me of that so much. I'll be having fun with this for a long time. Great work!

This seems nice. Now I'm wondering if this'll have a PC and RPi version.

However, I will buy the Android app later.
Still learning...

I bought the app. It's really fantastic, but I still think there should be a PC and/or RPi version.
Great job regardless.
