Low Latency on LInux

Post by Anforium »

So I've recently installed Linux (Ubuntu 12.04), and of course, the first thing I tried was Sunvox. On Windows I always use ASIO4ALL to achieve extremely low latencies with my crappy onboard sound card (down to 2ms). How would I go about doing the same in Linux?

There are some linux distributions which specialise in media production, and have low latency and realtime features.

Sorry, I don't remember names offhand.

I can get very low latencies on my Debian+ALSA without any special modifications.

I used ALSA with 2ms and the latency lowered, although nowhere near realtime. I guess this will involve some terminal work

I installed the lowlatency kernel and everything seems improved. I may try the realtime kernel later :)

Its all about the buffer size! If you only have ALSA then set the buffer in sunvox as low as posible. If you are using jack then you need to lower the buffer size for that and keep the frames low too and have sunvox's buffer low. I use AvLinux and have a latency of just more than half a millisecond. :)
