Linux Crash/Freeze

Post by hseiken »

In Linux 64 version, I did these steps and got an infinite 'LOADING...' window and no response from Sunvox:

1.) made a song file intended to be metamachine.
2.) saved that song.
3.) started new song.
4.) created metamodule
5.) loaded song I just made into metamodule
6.) connected generator and sound2ctrl to it and adjusted settings on them
7.) edited the file loaded in metamodule through the EDIT button on the module
8.) added module inside that one intended to be new 'INPUT' module and connected it to other machines
9.) backed out to main song, input machine setting no longer gave feedback at bottom of parameters showing machine names
10.) infinite loading window popped up after attempting to EDIT the loaded song in the metamodule again.

I haven't recreated it, but this is the pretty close to the general steps I took to get the crash/freeze.

EDIT:

This happened in the newest beta and I haven't recreated it on any version.

Can you reproduce this bug again on your pc?
If so, can you please send me the whole song from the (6) step?

I can't seem to recreate it now!

When it froze, I couldn't even end it's process, I ended up restarting my computer and I can't recreate it now. I guess the problem may have actually been on my end? Possibly ALSA hang up?

I've been using the 32bit linux 1.8b for a week or two now and it has crashed and froze a lot. I can't seem to find a repeatable problem though. About 50% the time I can't use the Window manager surround X button to exit the program. it will just say saving and hang there until I kill it. i haven't started a new song in 1.8b, I only opened big projects I made originally in 1.7.5. Ill keep trying to repeat any crash I get.

ALSA snd_pcm_writei error: Broken pipe
ALSA EPIPE (underrun)
ALSA snd_pcm_writei error: Broken pipe
ALSA EPIPE (underrun)

I clicked the little x in the top right corner and these where the last terminal messages.

Over the coming days ill try to post if it happens again.

I'm getting a lot of freezes in 1.8 (Linux 64-bit)

Here's output from a freeze:

Code: Select all

SunDog Engine / Nov 17 2014 14:17:27
MAIN: device start
MAIN: screen_angle = 0
MAIN: screen_zoom = 1
MAIN: screen_ppi = 110
MAIN: screen_scale = 256 / 256
MAIN: screen_xsize = 800
MAIN: screen_ysize = 600
MAIN: system palette init
MAIN: wmanager initialized
Audio buffer size: 1280 frames
ALSA: pulse
ALSA HW Default rate: 48000
ALSA HW Rate: 48000 frames
ALSA HW Buffer size: 2560 frames
ALSA HW Period size: 256
ALSA HW Periods: 0
ALSA SW Avail min: 256
ALSA SW Start threshold: 1
ALSA SW Stop threshold: 2560
Stack ptr: 0
It seems the freeze can happen at any time, but the most reliable way i've found to reproduce it is to load a song while another song is playing. If i start sunvox and just load and play songs it usually freezes after just a few, although sometimes it doesn't happen for a while. Sometimes it keeps playing the song when it freezes.

(I get the ALSA broken pipe messages too sometimes, right after starting sunvox, but i'm pretty sure that's unrelated. That happens in 1.7.5 too. When it happens, everything plays way too fast (mostly sounds like noise). It usually fixes itself after a short while. The freezes did not happen in 1.7.5, to be clear)

Hm... some problems with PULSE maybe...
What is your sound card?
Please try to change the audio device in SunVox preferences.

And yet another solution - try to use the JACK

Hi, sorry for not getting back to you before. I switched to SDL audio and that fixed the freezes in 1.8.

But, Sunvox 1.9b freezes a lot more than before even with SDL audio, during normal use (not just loads). Sometimes it crashes. It's pretty unusable. I haven't tried JACK because I've never gotten that to work in anything without breaking audio in everything else. I want stuff that use ALSA or Pulseaudio to keep working while Sunvox is running :/

This is on a different pc than before, running Ubuntu 15.04. I just use an integrated soundcard (ALC1150)

e: 1.8.1 freezes too now. It's strange, it used to work with SDL :(

So the random freezes mostly went away for some reason, but it consistently freezes every time i quit sunvox or create a new project after having worked on another one, and sometimes when i load a song or module. If there's anything i can do to help track this down, please let me know!

Please try to switch back to the ALSA.
Then try to use different devices in the Output field (Audio Preferences).
Frequency should be set to Auto.

Thank you! Setting frequency to auto fixed it.

I'd like to be able to use 48khz for at least wav export though (to avoid unnecessary resampling for some things). Is it possible to change only the wav export frequency somehow?
